Fire Prevention Information

Fire Prevention and Education is one of the best ways to help save life and property. The Augusta Department of Public Safety (ADPS) Fire Division is active in the fire prevention campaign and regularly conducts fire safety talks and demonstrations.

As part of this effort, ADPS participates in National Fire Prevention Week, along with a large number of other Fire Departments throughout the United States. During this week, fire division personnel and volunteers visit the schools and day cares throughout the City and the Fire District to stress the importance of Fire Prevention to local youth.

Some of the themes and messages that ADPS participates in are:

"GET LOW AND GO!"

This term reminds children, if they find themselves inside a structure that is burning, to get low and go. Smoke and heat rise to the ceiling and then fill the highest areas before working down. Due to this, the clearer and cooler areas are those close to the floor.

"GET OUT AND STAY OUT!"

A message is relayed to youth to get out of the building and stay out of the building. Officers remind kids not to go back into the house to try to save pets or toys. Stay out until the firefighters get there so they don't have to worry about you too!

"STOP, DROP, and ROLL"

"Stop, Drop, and Roll" is a widely recognized theme referring to what actions should be followed should your clothes catch on fire. Running will only fuel the fire and can make it bigger. If you stop, drop, and roll back and forth while covering your face, you are more likely to extinguish the fire and reduce harm to yourself.

To inquire about a fire safety talk or demonstration, contact the Fire Division at (316) 775-4500.
